There is a clever way of making the others render control over to you: constantly complain. People long for positive feedback on what they do, so your being constantly dissatisfied by their work easily gets them annoyed and slightly offended, and they are eager to let yourself do it instead.
When was the last time someone was rewarded in your organization for raising difficult questions about the company’s current policies rather than solving urgent problems?) Even if we feel uncertain or ignorant, we learn to protect ourselves from the pain of appearing uncertain or ignorant. That very process blocks out any new understandings which might threaten us. The consequence is what Argyris calls “skilled incompetence” — teams full of people who are incredibly proficient at keeping themselves from learning.
It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance
To do profound, hight quality intellectual work on a project, I need to forget all the other projects I am currently engaged in. Forgetting takes time (an hour or two). Ask me a brief question about another project once an hour — and I’ll have accomplished nothing by the end of day.
Once, people were consuming news and scientific information in discrete packages — books, newspaper & journal issues, novels. Since mass adooption of radio, we have been connected to more and more “streams” of information simultaneously.
Estimating tasks is hard. Essentially, it is predicting the future, which is known to be hard. But we can apply some tricks from queue & resource management in IT systems to personal throughput. All my life I have run from that — maybe now it’s time to take on that problem.
No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
Imagine you have a rule: you always walk whenever you’re traveling a mile or less, and you always drive whenever you’re going more than a mile. If you follow that rule, you will, paradoxically, travel two miles faster than you travel one mile. That’s the region beta paradox.
“That’s a [bad people]’s talking point!” — is what people say about true statements they find inconvenient to their worldview. If the statement were false, they’d simply say that.
A GUI is better than a CLI interface.
I see an obvious step forward: a GUI that would automatically run man
, parse the instructions and build controls of the corresponding types for all the options: checkboxes for flags, file dialogs for arguments that accept file paths etc.
It is just impossible not to start moving to those drums / base patterns
You may act according to your will, but you cannot will what you will
Simplicity is a great virtue but it requires hard work to achieve it and education to appreciate it. And to make matters worse: complexity sells better.

If you’re intellectually honest and advocate for a system that controls people, turn over the keys to your enemies for a dry run
Almost everyone chooses permanent chronic pain over temporary acute pain
What is called “commitment” works like a sacrifice, in a way. This sacrifice is something that you acknowledge that must be given away in exchange of reaching the necessary goal. You even tend to have aversion to it, condemn it.
You can’t think your way out of a courage deficit. Thinking can lead you to think that you need to do more thinking. In this regard you can totally have a thinking addiction, and once you look out for it you start noticing problem thinkers everywhere. The challenging thing is that you can get addicted to intermediate steps that are genuinely helpful.
There is a rarely openly expressed consensus that it is more important to keep everyone on the same page than to be as truthful as possible. It becomes very explicit when you run against it, especially in most public schools environments
There is never a good moment to stand up to incremental tyranny. By design.
